Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brett Larkin, Founder of Uplifted Yoga, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run the Uplifted Yoga community. My programs in Vinyasa, Hatha, and Kundalini have touched hundreds of thousands of people. I have been setting the standard for highly interactive, online yoga certification since 2015, celebrating individuality and empowering yogis to actively design their lives. I work with everyone from beginner yogis to seasoned professional yoga teachers!

Tell us about yourself

Uplifted Yoga began as a passion project. I just loved yoga and started to make YouTube videos so I could remember the sequences (series of poses) that I did. It never occurred to me that people would actually want to watch them and follow along! As the channel gained traction, more ideas flooded in on how to make more/ different types of content and reach more people.

Fast forward to today, and I feel motivated and humbled as current and former students regularly email in to tell me how my training courses have not only ignited their yoga teaching careers but also created a positive ripple effect in every aspect of their LIVES.

My head hits the pillow every night feeling excited, knowing that I'm not only empowering incredibly compassionate yoga teachers but that I'm also providing them with the tools, techniques, and teachings to create a profitable, impactful yoga career.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Pioneering and perfecting the system of certifying yoga teachers online years before the pandemic made this method a necessity for so many. I was the first person in the world to put an interactive 200-Hour Yoga Certification Program online in 2015 and run it live in real-time. Since then, I've trained and certified thousands of yoga teachers and healers!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Delegation. The transition from going from a solopreneur to a CEO has been challenging for me because of my super strong urge to have a hold on everything that happens within the company. But as it continues to grow, it's simply not realistic. It's become hugely important for me to learn how to hire a team and let the expertise of those around me handle a lot of the day-to-day issues of the company so I'm free to focus on what's next.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take action. Don't wait for the perfect storm to hit because it never will.
  2. Connect with your audience -- ask them what they need from you.
  3. Learn to delegate and trust your support system.
