Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in books but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marcela Mangarelli and Cynthia Rodriguez, founders of Upaupa Caja De Aventuras, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

¡Hola! We have a Spanish children’s books subscription box. Our customers are families raising kids in a multilingual reality. We are here to help them preserve our heritage language.

Tell us about yourself

We are two immigrant moms who love books and children’s literature. We have seen firsthand the benefits of reading in several languages to your children. We want to share that enriching experience with other families in Canada (and hopefully, the whole world).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Little by little, it builds a name as a referent for Children’s books in Spanish in Canada. We have just started, but we are happy to see how the target we had in mind when we imagined our service responded very well to our offer. We are also pleased to have a social side to our business by sending books and activities to children in need in Latin-American. We have impacted more than 100 children so far, and we wish to continue doing so.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Probably the fact that the week has only seven days? :) We have to share our time between our business, families, and other responsibilities. There are also many details that you have to learn by making mistakes and adjusting daily. Also, to convince people of the importance of keeping their mother language.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research (a lot) about your market niche.
  2. Invest wisely. Be ready to have to discard that beautiful design that you can’t afford at the beginning.
  3. Don’t stay only online. Go outside and talk to real people about your offer.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Try to work with something that you could easily explain if asked while you’re asleep. It’s way easier to get people to buy your stuff if they easily understand why they need it.
