What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a media company that publishes a small portfolio of online publications and podcasts for folks interested in learning more about the world, themselves, and each other.
Tell us about yourself
I started a skeleton version of Understandary back in 2009 when I left LA (and my branding studio there) to travel the world and write full-time. I wanted to fill in the (massive) gaps in my knowledge and understanding of the world and myself, and much of my writing was oriented around sharing what I learned with my audience. Over time, this led to the publication of a few dozen books, a handful of podcasts, some video projects, a bunch of online hubs, and a few hundred speaking engagements for crowds of 5 and 5,000 worldwide.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a sustainable business that allows me to experiment, play, grow as a person, and engage with interesting and interested people, globally.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Investing oneself in an array of projects and ambitions without overcommitting or burning out. It's easy to get carried away by the enthusiasm and drain the joy from projects that (if done differently and with greater care and intention) might be really wonderful and valuable undertakings.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure you know why you're doing it and why you're doing it the way you're doing it.
- Allow yourself to iterate and evolve as you learn, explore, and change as a person.
- Ensure all aspects of what you're doing are sustainable (in terms of energy, psychological needs, physical health, finances, pace, and everything else).
