Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristi Sonnee, Founder and Owner of Under One Woof, located in River Falls, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a Dog Daycare, Boarding, and Grooming business. We focus on the dog owners on the go, whether they are busy all day at work, after work with the kids, or want to get away on the weekend and can't always bring their dog.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the dog business for over 20 years. I started out working as a groomer but always wanted to start my own daycare and boarding business. I love dogs and seeing the joy when they come in the door to play or watching them prance when they look good after a groom.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing the constant growth of the business and myself. It makes me really proud to have done it myself. But, making it thru Covid and still surviving has been huge.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing staff and customers for sure. A lot comes into play when you're dealing with live animals. Making sure the staff is living up to expectations as well as safety standards is a constant struggle. As for the customers, it was really hard learning you can't please everyone, and some people are just mean because they are mean.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you do research. Look into the field and the requirements. Don't do something just because it seems fun. Make sure you know what you are getting into.
  2. Set goals, meet them, and set new ones. Don't let yourself become stagnate or settle. You should always be looking to improve your business and practices.
  3. Get a good team behind you, whether it's family support, staff, friends, or a marketing team. These people can make a huge difference.
  4. Go for it. You can do it!
