Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Uma Alexandra Beepat, CEO of The Lotus and The Light Metaphysical Center, located in Manassas, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own the Lotus and the Light Metaphysical Center. We provide classes and services in metaphysical development, life coaching, psychic readings, energy healing, and psychic mentorship. We serve primarily people who are looking to increase the quality of their life, heal from past traumas, develop their spiritual journey and enhance their natural psychic abilities.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been a helper in the hospital/medical field. I decided to change careers to the holistic field when I realized that many struggles people were going through could be worked on with internal healing and assessment. I am motivated by my clients' progress and seeing them live happy and peaceful lives after our work is done.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is owning a thriving metaphysical center for the past 13 years. I get to create a safe space and healing community for needy people, which feels good to me!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is your expectation and demand to meet others' professional needs. I am constantly being sold to in terms of other business owners wanting to use me and my reputation to further their products and services. While I like helping others, I do not like feeling manipulated, which has been an issue over the years.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself and your product. No one can do that for you, so don't look to your friends or family to be your cheerleaders. You will experience dark times, and you need to lean on your inner knowing and have confidence in what you do.
  2. Invest in marketing and advertising, don't be cheap! You have to get the word out because even if you are the best at what you do, it will not be successful if no one knows about it. Create a marketing budget from the beginning.
  3. Invest in your self-development. Hire a life coach and business coach to keep you on track with your goals and to have accountability to. As long as I have been a business owner, I have had multiple coaches, teachers, and mentors, so think of it as an investment for the long term.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My father always said if you love what you do for work, then it isn't work! Enjoy yourself and have fun, and trust in the process of unfolding.
