What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business partner, Jessie, and I own two brunch restaurants called Two Chicks, as well as a grilled cheese restaurant called GourMelt in Reno, Nevada. Our customers are locals as well as visitors of the Reno/Tahoe area, lovers of fresh ingredients.
Tell us about yourself
I began working in the food and beverage industry at the age of 14. I have worked in almost every position, from line cook to cocktail waitress to fine dining. We started our own business with a food truck specializing in grilled cheese in 2014 and built it into the 3 brick and mortar stores we have now.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my biggest accomplishment is continually being voted top 3 of the best restaurants in our area by people's choice polls. It validates our hard work and the love that our team has for what we do.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is managing almost 100 people. We strive to make everyone feel like family, and it's not always easy to juggle all the different personalities, but we definitely try.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- I would say that you have to be willing to give your all for quite a bit of time until things run smoothly.
- Then you have to learn to delegate responsibility and relinquish some control, which can be difficult.
- Lastly, you should try to listen to your critics to see if they offer any insight on ways you can improve. There is always room for improvement.
