Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Zavala, CEO of Turn the Page Book Coaching, located in Holly Springs, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Turn the Page is a book coaching and editorial services business - I help authors at all stages of their writing journeys make their publishing dreams into realities.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been attracted to great stories and the power of language. Books were huge in our house growing up, and I have always been crazy about movies as well. I worked in the entertainment industry for several years before realizing publishing is where I need to be.

I love getting to read for a living, but seeing the transformation that takes place in an author's life when their book gets out into the world is what always keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've worked on thousands of script and book projects over the years, and while there are some books that I'm particularly proud of, I would say my biggest accomplishment is happy clients!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Everything is basically up to you. You can hire experts to help you with things like social media or accounting, but at the end of the day, you are the one responsible for keeping the ship afloat, morale high, and so on. It can be a lonely life at times, but it can also be beyond exciting!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient - it's difficult to be a raging success overnight, and there are lots of times when it will be a feast or famine month (or year). If you're passionate about your business, however, you will succeed!
  2. Get comfortable asking for help. It was gratifying to put my website together myself, but it is a better use of my time to hire a professional to help me with website issues rather than spending time on it myself when I could be doing things I'm "good" at, like editing, or talking to authors.
  3. Avoid shiny object syndrome. There is always a project you can take on - rebranding, new business cards, new certifications, etc. It's so easy to get caught up doing things other people are doing instead of what we should be doing - client work, reaching out to customers, posting offers on our social media, etc.
