Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kayanne McDermott, Founder of True Vine Wellness, LLC., located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a naturopathic consultant who helps men and women get healthy by working on their guts. The gut is the foundation of health and wellbeing. If the gut is not in check, then the rest of the body is not. Think of your body as a tree, with the gut being the roots; the roots are where the tree gets its nutrients to function & grow. If the roots are dry, rotten & malnourished, then the tree won't be able to grow and eventually would dry up. I work with individuals who may be having hormone imbalances and gut dysfunction such as constipation, indigestion, acid reflux, and bloating. With working with the gut then, other imbalances begin to correct themselves, such as high blood pressure, diabetes type 2, high-stress levels, and even difficulty with weight loss. It all starts with the gut.

Tell us about yourself

I first got into this industry because I believe in the healing power of nature. Having a Caribbean background, I grew up around natural remedies for all sorts of ailments. I also experienced it firsthand when my father was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, he was sent home to die, and he met a Naturopathic Doctor who worked with him, and he was able to live an additional 11 years! With that, I got into the same field, believing I, too, can support and help others overcome dis-ease, educate and empower others to be healthy, live healthily & overcome every stumbling block that can be keeping them in sickness. I'm motivated by how many people are still in need of holistic care and still do not know that it exists or what it's all about. I envision where I want to be and how many people I want to help, and that gets me going every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

  1. Getting a business started is no easy task in itself.
  2. Being able to help a person overcome or manage their health issues & feel better.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, I would say the toughest thing is wearing different hats to keep the business afloat. While managing the front end of things, I also have to balance managing the business on different aspects with also balancing my personal life.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research first, and come up with a business plan or business canvas before starting anything.
  2. Knowing what you want because times will get challenging, and once you're determined to get to your goals, challenges won't stop you; they will motivate you to keep going.
  3. Get a coach, if you can, that can help with personal & business development. If you can't pay for one, then at least find 1 or 2 that understand your field and follow them on social media or read their books.
  4. I know you asked for 3, but I have to add this :-). Invest in yourself as much as you can. Take time out for yourself, or else you'll get burned out and crash.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Yes, I have a Gut Health Program that includes meals & genetic assessment. Anyone that's having gut disturbances has been trying everything and still to no avail or having difficulty with weight loss; try my Gut Health Program by going to my website to book and start the process. Most disturbances can be reversed if we start with the gut.
