Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Molly Mahoney, Owner of True Therapy, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

True Therapy is a private practice counseling office that offers therapy to individuals, couples, and families in our Scottsdale office or online for anyone residing within Arizona. Specialties include treatment for OCD, anxiety, depression, addiction, grief/loss, perfectionism, and trauma using EMDR therapy and other proven methods.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been licensed and experienced mental health for over 23 years. I began my private practice, True Therapy, in August of 2020. My early experience at The Mayo Clinic provided a unique perspective on issues related to illness, grief, and loss. Working with employee assistance broadened my interest in perfectionism, anxiety/depression, addictions, and relationships. Life experiences led me to delve further into the specialties of OCD and family dynamics. I’ve since earned advanced certification in Marriage and Family Therapy and completed ERP training with the IOCD Foundation. I am also trained in and utilize EMDR therapy as an effective modality for processing past traumas and treating a variety of issues. Incorporating various treatment modalities is essential because each person has unique therapeutic needs. The mantra I follow is, “I’m going to believe in you until you believe in yourself.” It is my process to celebrate your wins and help you recognize the amazing person you are!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was launching a new business during the onset of a global pandemic while much of the country was in various states of lockdown and fear. The pandemic also caused a surge in the need for quality mental health services, so demand was plentiful, and it has been an honor to serve the community during these strange times.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things I’ve run into growing my practice is making time to ramp up a new employee. When you don’t have an office admin, you manage all aspects of your business, including all the scheduling and paperwork. When you add a new person to the team, there is a fair bit of overhead, including added marketing, phone calls, and advising on all the systems and documentation requirements. It was a surprise how much extra time that took for the first few months, but things smoothed out nicely. Having a second licensed therapist at True Therapy has allowed me to expand access to client scheduling, with the office open for appointments seven days per week.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My first tip to anyone looking to start a business is to have a good working knowledge of your service and the competition in the area. Secondly, plan to invest in a quality website and online presence because potential clients will review how you show up online before reaching out. Lastly, give yourself grace, time, and space to fail and learn in the areas you haven’t figured out yet – you just don’t know until you know!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

To anyone considering going solo, doubt will inevitably creep in. Believe in your skill set and talents. I have found overcoming doubts and taking the risk to be a business owner extremely rewarding!
