Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shannon Logan, Owner of True Core Performance & Wellness, located in Annapolis, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At True Core, we specialize in helping our members build their BEST lives. We work with them to improve not only their physical fitness but also their mental and emotional balance. We work with clients of all ages and backgrounds, helping them embrace their truest selves and improving the quality of their lives. We help our community through a variety of services such as group classes, small group personal training, 1-on-1 training, nutrition coaching, mindset work, events, & workshops.

Tell us about yourself

I have known my true purpose for a long time. From being physically active from a young age to playing varsity sports in college, it became clear athletics were part of my core identity. As I grew, my spark for knowledge increased. Through undergrad, grad school, and countless certifications, health and wellness not only became a core value but a way of life. Finding CrossFit allowed me to pursue my passion as both an athlete and a business owner. It introduced a whole new mindset of taking the impossible and making it possible. I have seen countless lives change through increased self-confidence, healthy lifestyles, and community support that comes with being part of True Core. I am blessed with the opportunity to embrace that lifestyle and feel honored to work with our members every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping make lasting changes in my clients' lives. When I work with one of our members and watch "the lights turn on" side of them - it is the most remarkable feeling. Watching people feel more purpose in their lives, know their self-worth, and start making themselves a priority inspires me to keep going!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You are never really "off." Even if you are away on vacation or it's a holiday etc., your business owner's mind is always working. That is especially true if you love what you do. You are always thinking of the next thing - the next best idea - the next best way to help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a business mentor! I started working with one after 3.5 years of doing it solo, and it's made all the difference!
  2. Make sure you have boundaries set. Even though you might LOVE what you are doing, you also have to have time to rest and recoup so you can continue to be your best at work.
  3. Take time to enjoy the wins. It's so easy to just move on to the next mountain left to tackle - yet you need to stop and see the progress you have made, or else you will always feel like you are just chasing your tail.
