Your Goals Are Our Goals - Tribe Fitness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maria Lee, owner of Tribe Fitness, located in Richmond North, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tribe Fitness is a non-judgmental, supportive space that makes the masculine endeavors of bodybuilding and weightlifting easy to access for women. We help young professionals and busy parents learn how to train for strength and sculpt their physiques safely and effectively. My motto for years: "We help moms become MILFs"!

Tell us about yourself

I've been working out since I was 17, so gyms are like a second home! Eight years ago, I was dating a successful personal trainer who loved his work. I was a technical editor and so stressed and miserable working nonstop at the office. Seeing how happy and fulfilled he was illuminated how important it was to have a meaningful pursuit.

I decided to get certified in PT and, six months later, incorporated Tribe. You know when you just know you're meant to be where you are? I feel that way when I'm on the floor with my clients. It's almost orgasmic (pardon my language) watching them master a new movement; it's like a puzzle piece falling into place. The best is when they start realizing they have control over their destiny and shine with confidence. It's amazing!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving all the lockdowns! So many gyms had to close their doors. Beyond that, being a positive part of my client's lives. We've only ever received 5-star reviews and maintain an A+ rating with the BBB. We were growing every year, and I was able to hit six figures by year three and save up enough to buy my first home. Putting in the work daily and believing in yourself does pay off.

As the pandemic has taught us, fitness is so important for our communities. Health is foundational to thriving at work, at home, and in relationships. If our bodies can't be relied on, then everything else becomes quite difficult.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Definitely the uncertainty of not having constant revenue you can rely on, like a paycheque. Everything is on you. The freedom is worth it, though! You get to create, evolve, learn from mistakes and own everything you achieve. It's an exciting journey where you are tested constantly and rewarded for courage.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First tip: Crystallize exactly why you're offering this service or product to the world. The Why needs to be deep enough so that others can connect with it in a significant way.

Second tip: Become comfortable with social media. No matter your view of it, it's a necessary and vital part of any business nowadays.

Third tip: Don't take things personally. Owning a business and making a vision reality means we need skin thick enough to withstand complaints and criticism. Never let it make you cynical; life is too magnificent for that!
