Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tremayne Jones, Owner of Betterview Counseling and Trauma Recovery LLC, located in Reading, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Betterview Counseling is a forward-thinking mental health agency that leverages technology, evidenced-based practices, and diverse clinicians to address a multitude of mental health issues in the state of Pennsylvania. Betterview uses a combination of telehealth and in-person therapy to help clients achieve personal levels of growth, otherwise thought impossible.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Tremayne Jones. I've worked in the mental health field for 23 years. There are many things that I took issue with concerning the deployment of mental health services in the inner city. Clients were treated as numbers, therapists were often overworked and overburdened, paperwork seemed to increase significantly, and morale was tanking. This directly impacted the clientele served. I eventually grew tired of complaining and decided to start my own practice to address my concerns. To my surprise, many therapists felt the same way. I was able to assemble a small team, and we began implementing our vision. The first thing we did was ensure that we leveraged technology to become more efficient. Then we decided to specialize in trauma since many of the population we served have experienced severe traumatic situations. Lastly, we decided to become very active in the community for others to see how genuine we are when it comes to impacting change. This has led to very quick success in a little over a year of existence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, my biggest accomplishment is growing a practice from an idea to over 200 clients 8 months. It was a testament to my idea that services could be rendered in a more efficient, compassionate manner.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The absolute hardest thing about being a business owner is self-doubt. The only thing that really holds you back is your beliefs about your abilities. Once I could deal with and dismiss the constant second-guessing, my business took off.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Biggest tip is to JUST START!
  2. DREAM BIG! Notice I put dream big after "just start." This ensures you don't fall into the trap of just dreaming and not doing.
  3. Get a mentor and pick his or her brain. Mentors will accelerate your growth 10x.
