Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Charith Madawela, Principal and Founder of Transform 180 Training, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is a personal training studio, and our customers are typically young tech workers who want to improve their physical health and overall well-being. We specialize in providing personalized fitness programs and coaching to help our clients achieve their specific fitness goals, whether it's building strength, losing weight, or improving overall fitness. Our goal is to help our customers feel their best, both physically and mentally, so they can perform their best in their everyday lives.

Tell us about yourself

I transformed myself from being an unhealthy, overweight child to someone who made fitness a part of my daily life. My motivation to get in shape was initially to impress someone, but eventually, it became a passion. After years of working in a corporate job, I knew I wanted to start a business, but I wasn't sure what field to pursue. It dawned on me that I could combine my passion for fitness with my desire to help others, and that's how I started my personal training business. Today, I'm able to help people achieve their fitness goals while also making a living doing what I love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say that my biggest accomplishment is being able to create job opportunities for others and contribute to the growth of the community. It's fulfilling to see my business become a platform for people to support themselves and their families and to see them grow professionally under my leadership.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging aspects for me is managing employees. It requires a delicate balance of leadership, communication, and empathy to ensure that everyone is working towards the same goals and feeling motivated and supported. However, it's also one of the most rewarding aspects of running a business, as seeing your team grow and succeed can be incredibly fulfilling.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to work harder than anyone else in your business. As a business owner, your job is a 24/7 commitment, and even when you're not physically working, you're likely still thinking about your business. This means being willing to put in long hours, make sacrifices, and be extremely dedicated to the success of your company.
  2. Know your numbers and keep a close eye on your expenses. You need to have a solid understanding of your business's financials, including revenue, expenses, profit margins, and cash flow. By keeping a close eye on your numbers, you can make informed decisions about where to invest your resources and when to cut back.
  3. Take your time when hiring new employees, but don't hesitate to let go of anyone who isn't a good fit. Hiring the right people is crucial to the success of your business, so it's important to take your time and find the best candidates. However, if you do hire someone who isn't working out, it's important to address the issue quickly and decisively. Keeping underperforming employees on staff can drag down morale and hurt your business in the long run.
