What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a qualified sleep therapist recognised by the Society for Behavioural Sleep Medicine. I work with adults who have chronic/long-term sleeping problems like insomnia, as well as those who want to optimise their sleep and performance.
Tell us about yourself
I have always been fascinated by sleep and the biopsychosocial aspects of healthy sleep. This also happens to be an area where there are a million 'gimmicks' that purport to 'cure insomnia,' and there is not a lot of emphases on evidence-based approaches. Cutting through the chaff to get to the kernel of what works fascinates me, hence focussing on approaches that have worked for over 30 years. The courage of my clients to make real changes to achieve their goals inspires me to continue this very rewarding work.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being chief/cook and bottle washer and not dropping the ball despite a very busy diary.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the most difficult things I have had to do in business is learning to refuse to work with some clients who are not suited to the work I do or if we have some major personality clash from the beginning. This has gotten easier over time as it is not a 'rejection' of any client; it is, in fact, taking care of them by ensuring they see someone more appropriate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make a plan and break it into parts so that you feel you are always moving forward. It can be disheartening in the beginning.
- Stick with it. Success isn't instant.
- Begin every day by asking yourself how you want to feel at the end of the day, and set your intention and tasks within your plan (number 1 and number 2) with that in mind.
