Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sorcha Lorimer, Founder of Trace, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Trace provides Privacy by Design services and solutions to help organizations secure their sensitive data and comply with regulations like the GDPR. We deliver on that promise through brilliant technology with an expert yet pragmatic consultancy, learning solutions, and framework design.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in an entrepreneurial family, but my career experience was very varied, culminating in a leadership position in a Fortune 500. I left that comfortable career to start Trace as I saw an opportunity to innovate in an emerging and exciting privacy market and deliver services and solutions of value to clients. I took the chance to follow my instinct, and I found the process of setting up a business and new services and products incredibly creatively rewarding. Creativity and feedback from clients and the team keep me motivated everyday. It's rewarding to create something from nothing and see that product take shape, be used, and add value.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Keeping going, building a team, delivering a product and services which are used by world-renowned brands.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Starting a business is not for everyone and not for the faint-hearted. At first, it can be lonely; there's no immediate support, so you have to dig deep or go and find your team. There's no comfort, but the flip side is a sense of freedom.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't overthink it or spend years perfecting a business plan. Go do it- get out and start to do work, speak to customers, and try out ideas. Doing is vital.
  2. Keep it simple. Don't try and build too many products at once - focus on one problem, one customer, and one market first - it's best to start with a niche.
  3. Give to get. Don't be shy to ask people for advice - but offer something each time too.
