Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Rounds, Owner of Towed Studio, LLC., located in Tucson, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am, first and foremost, an art jeweler. I make one-of-a-kind jewelry for bold people to rock their personalities. I also make and partner with other artists and makers to bring jewelry tools to market. I also teach others to bring the ideas in their hearts and heads to physical form.

Tell us about yourself

I have literally always been a maker, a problem solver, and an artist. I was building forts with my brother when I was little, making up games to keep us kids and cousins entertained, then encouraging my son to make things from his imagination. Now I make jewelry to brighten up a day, commemorate an occasion, or honor someone special that was lost. I love people and want to honor their stories. As a tool maker and teacher, I get to help launch other people’s creativity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am currently bringing a once barely affordable or chronically unsafely pieced-together tool to the market. It is the first of its kind… an affordable, portable, and put-away-able hydraulic press for jewelry, enamels, and other makers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is wearing all the hats. You have to figure out social media, accounting, taxes, websites, SEO, contracts, and so on. It is challenging, but I have been steadfast, for the first time in my life, that I will “figure it out” when, or just ahead of needing “it.” Once upon of time, I would have driven myself crazy trying to predict everything I needed to know or killed the dream with analysis paralysis.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be confident in yourself and your abilities, and others will too.
  2. Don’t quit! When you hit a roadblock, step back and figure it out.
  3. Put efficient processes or workflow in place early and as often as you can!
