What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a vegan color and textured hair specialty salon. Our client is the curly and textured hair woman or man who wants to feel free and beautiful with the natural curls in which they were born into this world.
Tell us about yourself
I always desired to work with my hands; my green thumb is working with organic hair and helping it to flourish in all its natural glory. I am touched when women/men realize they are full of inward and outward beauty by the end of their visit, which means I have touched them in some small way.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is remaining in business for 12 years. It comes with blood, sweat, and tears, but by the end of the day, I am still able to call it my own.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Adjusting to the constant shifts, whether from the smallest shifts as hair trends or major shifts as a global pandemic and your neighborhood being transient with people coming and going constantly.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Leap, and the net will appear! (Don't overthink anything, or you'll think yourself out of it).
- Reach out to a local mentor (business owner/entrepreneur). Someone is always willing and wants to give you unsolicited advice. All of your small nuggets of knowledge will add up to large sums of good decisions you will need to make.
- Constantly review your finances...to access what expense(s) need to stay or have to go. It is keeping your small rafter in the ocean light; if it's overloaded, you will sink.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Take time to give back to yourself. Invest self-love into your energy bank. You deserve it, don't dehydrate your energy. You will need it throughout the marathon. You got this!
