What's your business, and who are your customers?

I was a stay-at-home mom with a sweet tooth and big ambitions, so I turned my love for baking into a cookie business that just keeps on growing! I started by selling my totally awesome cookies at local farmers' markets. Before I knew it, I had to secure a storefront to keep up with increasing demand. When you enter our bakery, one of the most common remarks from our customers is how incredible it smells. That's when I had an idea—let's make a cookie mix so that people can bake our delicious cookies in their own homes—filling it with the warmth and aroma that only fresh-baked cookies can bring. I'm so happy to be able to make baking easier, faster, and less messy for all those busy people out there…and don't worry; we don't mind if you take all the credit.

Tell us about yourself

Being a stay-at-home mom with three kids, I was certainly busy, but I wanted to find a way to use my Marketing degree at the same time. That's when I started baking cookies and selling them at a local farmers' market. I didn't know then that it would turn into a cookie empire! I love being an entrepreneur, and building my business has taken a lot of hard work, but it's fun work! The passion I have for my business has never wavered, and as I've grown my team, it has become even more rewarding. Not only do I get to work alongside incredible people, but I have even more reason to work on achieving my goals and seeing my company grow.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing my business go from a single farmers' market booth with production based out of my home to a full-fledged retail shop employing an outstanding team of over 25 employees.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the responsibility you have over others' livelihoods. I take very seriously the fact that the success of my business doesn't impact just myself anymore. As hard as that is, I use it as further motivation to fuel my passion for getting our totally awesome cookies into the hands of as many people as I can. I believe that cookies make people happy, and that is the feeling I want to spread with this business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just go for it! You may be waiting for the perfect moment, but you can learn and figure it all out as you go.
  2. Build a great team. You can't do it alone, so make sure you choose your help carefully. Surround yourself with supporters and listen to their input.
  3. Take risks. Being an entrepreneur can be scary, but in order to grow, sometimes you need to step outside your comfort zone and try a new direction.
