Tell us about yourself

I've been in the beauty industry for 36 years. I have travelled the globe for education and inspiration so that I can offer the best to my guests and my team members. After 22 years working in a downtown salon, I decided to go back to my roots, where I grew up in the Parkview Crestwood area, to open my own salon. It has been nine years since I opened Tommie Salon, and I'm so grateful I had the courage to forge ahead with my dream. We have had so much success over the years, and we continue to grow. I have built so many long-standing relationships over the years with my clients and colleagues; we have seen each other grow and evolve.

I love making a difference in people's lives. That is what motivates me. It feeds my soul when I can nurture a stylist straight out of school and see them become successful personally and professionally.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be the growth of my staff that I have supported to become masters in the beauty industry. I am also very proud of the recognition we have earned by being titled the # 1 hair salon in Edmonton.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is that it is a 24/7 job. You can't just close the doors at the end of the week and be done. I'm filling out this questionnaire on a Sunday afternoon, and this is a pretty typical thing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The most important thing is to find the right staff! My next tip would be to create a very defined culture with your staff. Have fun at work, and don't sweat the small stuff.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I think it's important to recognize how important your team is. Many stylists have gone out on their own in our industry, either working from home or suite rentals. I believe this will become very lonely and lack inspiration. A strong team with the same core values can support one another and help create a huge impression with guests that an individual just wouldn't be capable of achieving. It takes a lot of communication, education, and true compassion from the owner to accomplish this.
