Toast your someday moments - Hello Someday Wine

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in winemaking but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jim and Jaime Love, co-founders of Hello Someday Wine, located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We founded Hello Someday Wine, a wine brand. Our wine is produced in British Columbia, Canada, and sold in select Alberta stores. Our customers are wine enthusiasts who love to support local businesses.

Tell us about yourself

In 2015 we stayed in Kelowna the week following our wedding with some family and friends. The weather was beautiful, and we spent our days touring the wineries in the Okanagan Valley, where we spent all our money. It was on the first day, at the first winery, where Jim saw a quote from the winery's founder that said, “he had always been a farmer, and now he just farmed grapes.”

Jim grew up on a mixed farm and had always thought of going back into farming one day (and not just for the stylish rubber footwear). But he had never considered a vineyard.

That week we visited many wineries. Some were large and well-known, and some were much smaller and new to us. We went to a winery that transformed their garage into a tasting room and a winery with a tent for their tasting room. We realized that wineries came in many different sizes, and maybe you didn’t need to rob a bank to start one. So we spent that week looking up properties, and we started to dream. Fast forward four years, and we finally made the leap, and here we are today.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The first time we saw our wine sold in a store. It was amazing to finally see one of our dreams come true.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Trying to find a good work-life balance. We are entrepreneurs who still have to keep our day jobs and raise a 2-year-old active little boy. Besides a love for wine, we’re pursuing our dream because we would like to raise Lucas in this lifestyle. Being an entrepreneur is challenging, don’t forget why you’re working so hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just go for it. Don't over analyze your decision. Sometimes, you just need to take the leap.
  2. Ask for help. We've had a lot of people involved in our journey since the start. Their specialized expertise has helped us tremendously.
  3. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. They are going to happen and are necessary for you to learn.
