Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Balin, Owner of TMB Wellness, located in Franklin, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a functional medicine consulting business that focuses on optimizing wellness within individuals with the utilization of personalized lab testing. My customer is someone wanting to improve their health by optimizing micronutrient needs, gut health, hormone regulation, and promote anti-aging.

Tell us about yourself

Since becoming a nurse and now a nurse practitioner, I have worked with cancer patients. Over the years, I have found that the standard American diet, past traumas, toxins, and many other lifestyle factors contribute to the development of cancer. This motivated me to start learning about how we can prevent cancer from occurring, and I took a deep dive into functional medicine. We must look at the whole person and their terrain to optimize their wellness to help prevent cancer and promote wellness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment has been just starting. I have two small children, work full time, and I am in a fellowship for functional medicine. It can be easy to say, "I am too busy" to start, but the fact that I did has been an accomplishment in itself. I am constantly learning and growing, and I think that is important.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The fact that you are IT! For many years I have worked for large healthcare corporations that have so much support to back you up. I have found that communication is key, and I am constantly working on that. I am always very transparent with clients, and I think as long as we are honest and open, that can help grow the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always be open and have integrity. This is key. You want to make sure your clients know what to expect and own any miscommunication.
  2. Things will change as you go, and that is ok. You will find things that fill your soul, and your focus may shift. Know that this is part of growing.
  3. If you truly care, it will show in your work. Showing people you care and that you may not have all the answers, but you are willing to work with them to find them is important.
