What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help people who want 1) to be a leader that others want to follow, 2) their organization to run smoothly and effectively 3) to leverage their habits for optimal performance at work and home.
I'm an organizational Consultant & Leadership Coach whose also a published author, speaker, and professor. I help leaders create cultures that inspire themselves and their teams to lead a sustainable, inclusive, profitable workplace and be the leader they've always known they were meant to be. I help people find their high-performance edge and create results that drive profit in this time while at the same time living their own lives to the fullest.
Tell us about yourself
I experienced leadership early in my career as I opened, developed, and ran several large and small businesses. I worked with all kinds of leaders and trained leaders too. Throughout that time, I realized that leadership is a very misunderstood position.
I didn't have role models for leadership in my life, nor did I identify with any popular leadership speakers or trainers since they are mostly male and have distinctively male qualities. I decided to burgeon a style of leadership that was completely my own. I began by studying the qualities of leaders that people want to follow—and the kind of leadership that leads both people and organizations to success. From that foundation, I built my own platform and then set out to help others do the same.
Contrary to popular belief, leadership doesn't come from a title at work or from being the loudest speaker. It's much more than that. Leadership is also not something that people are born into, it takes skill, and anyone who cares enough can develop themselves into a better leader.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've pivoted three times through the pandemic. I continue to see the trends and where people are in the most need of help. Today, we need our leaders to know more about how to lead well, so they can run organizations where people want to work and stay. Leaders affect many people and infinite aspects of people's lives for the better—or for the worse.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner who is starting from square one is doing absolutely everything yourself. After working in organizations where I had a marketing department, HR department, admin department, finance department, cleaning department, and more, I had no idea how much work it would be to do it all on my own.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Leaders who surround themselves with great people accomplish great things.
- Never ever underestimate the power of rest. Purposeful quiet time will give you more power and efficiency than many hours of work. Even small breaks will stimulate creativity, epiphanies, and unexpected breakthroughs.
- Find your support group early. When you're always putting energy out to other people and the world, you need people in your life who help replenish your energy. This includes physical and mental health professionals, coaches, and others along your path who will help you get where you want to go in business—and also in life.
