What's your business, and who are your customers?
We make natural wines and canned spritzes in California - with a focus on flavor and sustainability. If it's not delicious or farmed without chemicals, we won't sell it. Our customers are anyone who enjoys flavor-forward refreshments without the high calories and folks who prefer sustainable and transparent winemaking.
Tell us about yourself
I discovered wine spritzes while in Spain and came to love the flavor-forward, yet light, beverages. After a brief stint as an investment banker and a near-fatal car accident, I jumped into taking an idea for a spritz brand and making it a reality. More recently, I began focusing on how my food was sourced in my personal life, which made me aware of how unsustainable winemaking can be, as well as the lack of transparency in the industry. This sparked our shift in focus at Tinto into natural wine.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Seeing my products in strangers' hands. It's a very fulfilling experience to see a concept go from idea to shelf to discovering customers loving what you do.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Uncertainty. Nothing is certain and being able to deal with that is something you're never introduced to in university or in the corporate world.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I have only one tip: learn not to be attached to outcomes or expectations. The more capable you are of bouncing back from things not going as expected, the more successful you'll be at growing your business....because things will almost certainly not go as expected more often than not. But that's the fun of it.
