Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tina Brinkley Potts, High-Performance Coach and Keynote Speaker, based in Camden, DE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Tina Brinkley Potts, and I am a strategist, automation expert, and high-performance coach. I help my clients leverage technology and their intellectual property to grow wildly successful businesses.

Tell us about yourself

I am a driven and motivated individual with a passion for entrepreneurship and innovation. My journey in business started over ten years ago when my mother became ill. She had a stroke and, a few months later, a heart attack. I quit my job to take care of my mom since she was all I had left. My father died when I was 22 years old, so for me, it was people before money. During that time, I needed to figure out how I could utilize my current skill set while defining my own work hours. The referrals started coming in left and right, including previous employers.

Then the most magical thing happened. More and more professionals started coming to me, wondering how I did it. These professionals wanted to work on their own terms, create financial freedom and create an impact on the world. My desire to make a positive impact, help others create their own economy, and bring new ideas to life is what drives me each day. I am constantly seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally, and I am dedicated to making a meaningful contribution to the world through my work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is a very hard question because there are so many. I will state two accomplishments. First, I did all of the due diligence to make the company public. This was probably one of the most rewarding and challenging accomplishments in my life. The second accomplishment would be becoming Keap 2020 Rookie of the Year. I am the only black person and definitely the only black woman to hold this title. Being a leader in the sales and marketing automation space brings me great joy!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is balancing the various responsibilities and making tough decisions. As a business owner, you are responsible for all aspects of the business, including managing finances, making strategic decisions, managing employees, and ensuring customer satisfaction. This requires strong leadership skills, time management abilities, and the ability to handle stress and uncertainty. Additionally, business owners often face the challenge of finding the right balance between work and personal life, which can be difficult and demanding.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn and master the buying process and the client journey. This will help you fill in the gaps most business owners and entrepreneurs miss.
  2. Automate first and then delegate - Many business owners hire too quickly and fire slowly. It is most important to create sound processes and systems and then automate as much of them as you can. The delegation will be easier and more productive.
  3. Lead with your personality - People want to do business with other people, so hiding behind the "company" slows your growth.
