What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have been into martial arts since 1976 and am an 8th Degree Black Belt. I have been married to my wife Debbie now for 38 years, and she is a 6th Degree Black Belt. We have two children, our son Tim II who is 33 years old and has a 5th Degree Black Belt, and our daughter Nicole, 30 years old and also a 5th Degree Black Belt. Our family together has evolved our program into the Family Life Center of St. Petersburg LLC. We partner with families and parents to nurture and mentor their children through the “Tim McCahan After School Sports Program.” We have been running this after-school sports program since 2000, servicing between 15 and 18, public and private schools, picking up between 75 and 100 children on a daily basis!
Tell us about yourself
The main purpose of our program is to NURTURE and MENTOR children from kindergarten thru sixth grade through an After School Sports Program. Children in elementary age are the most impressionable. That’s when we desire to become a superhero to them. We thrive on teaching them how to think better and how to make better choices in life. We awaken their conscience to understand the consequences. We build those positive little habits into their character by learning how to stop, think about consequences, and to learn to make those good choices in life! We are teaching them that they are right now as little kids learning to develop and guide where their life is heading with the choices and decisions that they are making.
The middle school ages are the MOST dangerous times in a child’s life! That’s where they may NOT be smart enough to know better, yet that’s when life begins to introduce them to many of the negative situations in life that they should be turning away from. Like, skipping school, cheating, lying about things, stealing, smoking cigarettes, vaping, alcohol, drugs, sex, along with many other issues. Our passion and anointing is to build character, self-esteem, and confidence in children, helping them in becoming educated and smart enough in the elementary ages, building all those positive habits in themselves to undertake the challenges they are heading into in middle school ages.
Learning to keep their lives heading in a positive direction by making those better choices and decisions in life and turning away from negative situations. We teach children how to be good friends, pick their friends wisely, and, most importantly, turn away from those friends trying to influence them into bad decisions causing them to head down the WRONG roads in life!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Bringing up my family with the practice of martial arts! Planting the seeds in them that they are carrying on what teaches children all about character development, success skills, and life lessons! Simply teaching kids how to keep their life heading in a positive direction through the choices, decisions, and goals they set while growing up!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Keeping the leads coming in and converting into new customers!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find the right mentor.
- There has to be a passion and an anointing for what you choose to do.
- Have enough reserves that would carry you through the growing pains.
