Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jack Sims, Co-Founder of Tiger Nuts Inc., located in Newburgh, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our company is Tiger Nuts Inc, and we sell through 3 very distinct channels:

  1. Online - We sell directly to consumers via our online store at www.tigernutsusa.com. We also sell through 2nd parties like Amazon, Walmart, and Kroger.
  2. Retailers - We ship direct and sell through health food chains like Natural Grocers, Erewhon, and Lassens in 44 states nationwide. We sell through Coops nationwide and through grocery chains like Wegmans.
  3. Bulk - We sell to companies that mix our Tiger Nuts products, like Flour and Sliced Tiger Nuts, into a blended product. We also co-pack for other brands.

Tell us about yourself

Our Tiger Nuts business came about after we realized that Tiger Nuts were not being sold in America, and we managed to get the import rights from the largest Tiger Nuts growing group located in Spain. We started in the US when no one had heard of a Tiger Nut, and today we are sold nationwide, and we believe part of that success is based on the belief in our Positioning Statement: "We want to inspire people to live and eat a healthy lifestyle, and hope that our Tiger Nuts can be a part of their journey." This is why we get up and focus on our business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having founded three different companies from a start-up to becoming national in size in Europe and the USA.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Making sure that we work on the business, not in the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't run out of cash! An old Texan friend once told me, "Cash Aint Cash unless it's cash." You see, cars, furniture, and buildings are assets, not cash. Know how much cash you have in the bank every night.
  2. Hire people that are better than you at doing what they do.
  3. Dream big.
