Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Estelle Levangie, Co-Owner of Thyme for Ewe Farm, located in Millville, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a small-scale family farm producing organic vegetables, herbs, pastured pork, free-range chickens, and grass-fed beef. We use biodynamic agriculture practices to ensure our products are of the highest quality/nutrition possible. Our customers are health-conscious people who want to support local farmers through the Farmers Market and the CB Food Hub.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up on a farm in France, I knew I wanted to have my own farm one day. After immigrating to Cape Breton in 2009 (which is where my husband is from), we found the perfect place to call our own, to raise our family, and create an income for ourselves. Farming is a very demanding profession, but I wouldn't want to do anything else. It's also a great way to raise children as they see you working each day toward your goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As farm owners, our biggest accomplishment is not giving up. We've had many things go wrong in 12 years, but we never threw in the towel and just kept going.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Nobody can tell you what to do, and sometimes it feels hard to make decisions, but what matters is not what you decide but the fact that you decided.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There will be hard days, but nothing worth doing is going to be easy, so keep your eyes on your goals.
  2. Ask for help when you need it.
  3. Do not wait to have everything figured out before starting. You will figure things out as you go.
