Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bobby & Janice Jucker, co-owners of Three Brothers Bakery Inc., located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our family began baking about 200 years ago in Poland. Three brothers and a sister survived the Holocaust, came to Houston, and opened Three Brothers Bakery 72 years ago.

Bobby Jucker continues the family legacy of scratch baking
we like to say we are "Memory Makers Who Happen to Be Bakers.®" because we have been baking memories for five generations. Three Brothers Bakery is a full-line, scratch retail bakery with a wholesale and online component, three stores, and 56 employees. We call ourselves the King and Queen of Disasters because we have survived four floods, a fire, hurricane, pandemic, and freeze. In 2018 the SBA awarded us the Phoenix Award for Small Business Disaster Recovery.

We are most famous for our pecan pie, which was named "Best Mail Order Pecan Pie America Has to Offer" by Country Living Magazine. Our Pumpecapple Piecake has been a viral sensation.

Tell us about yourself

Bobby comes from a family of bakers, so it's probably genetic. The three brothers were determined to live and survive, and we stand on their strong shoulders, motivating us to get through whatever is thrown in front of us. We also enjoy our Three Brothers Bakery family and understand we are their financial security, so we always want to be sure they never worry about if we'll be there for them. We always will.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving all the disasters, rebuilding and reopening, and now we're back on the path of growth.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Surviving all the disasters, rebuilding, and reopening :-). Seriously it is knowing that it is not easy, but it can be very fulfilling. We like creating jobs, and growth is hard. Small business is the economic engine of America, so every job we create makes the US economy stronger.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build your business to be sold. You may not sell it, but build it in that manner. That means you need to make sure you are not the business, and eventually, it can operate without you.
  2. Be passionate about what you do and, most importantly, be passionate about your team and your customers.
  3. Buy the best insurance you can afford to buy with the lowest deductible.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
