Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suzanne Godbold, owner of Three Best Bakery, located in Benton, AR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Three Best Bakery is a boutique bakery in Central Arkansas, sweetening up our local community as well as shipping nationwide. We make handmade, small-batch baked goods that will entice all sweets lovers, from the basic to the boujee.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a home baker with my two best friends in 2016. We were busy working moms and wanted a reason to get together intentionally, so we decided to start learning how to decorate sugar cookies. The business has grown significantly, and as the sole owner of the company now, I strive to continue the legacy of beautiful and delicious desserts.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There have been many accomplishments, and I think they are all important in their own way. From starting in at home to opening our retail storefront in December 2019 to navigating a global pandemic, the business has grown and changed so much. Introducing and growing our shipping customers has been very exciting; it is fun to connect and serve people all over the nation.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a small business owner is no joke, y'all. You will never work harder for anyone than you will for yourself, and sometimes those long days (and nights) wear on you and your relationships. As we've grown, one of the hardest things I've found is striving for that ever-elusive "work-life balance" and really defining what that looks like for my life.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's ok to start small. Just because you aren't an overnight success doesn't mean that you aren't going to be successful. Start small and grow at your own pace.
  2. You don't need the best, biggest, or fanciest (insert whatever you want) at the beginning. Do you want the newest computer and maybe have the cash to spend? Sure. Do you need it? Definitely not. Use what you have, save your money, and only upgrade when it's absolutely necessary for the growth and integrity of your business. You will be so thankful to have that cash in your pocket for a rainy day.
  3. It's ok to ask for help. Hate bookkeeping? Find someone who can help. Need an extra hand-folding shipping box? I bet there's someone that will come help (seniors in high school are motivated by extra spending money!). You will be so much happier and more able to stay within your strengths if you ask for help in areas that don't come easy to you
