Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in finance but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jim Gore, Chief Investment Officer of THOR Wealth Management, located in Cincinnati, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

THOR is a wealth management firm that serves as a financial "quarterback" for our clients. Our main focus is on Emerging Wealth and Pre-retirees clients.

Tell us about yourself

I started to work my senior year in college working with two stockbrokers that were starting up a pension consulting division. A few years later, they broke off as an independent firm, and I was the Chief Operating Officer while also consulting organizations (including two big Ten Universities on their endowment funds). I started THOR when I was 28 years old to help individuals and small businesses in a similar way. I am motivated each day to help our clients with not only their investments but all financial and other life decisions. In addition, being the Chief Investment Officer, I have the ability to learn something new every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Starting the business with no clients and building a firm that manages over $460 million in assets under management. In addition, out of the ten full-time employees at THOR, 8 are owners. Sharing success with others is probably my biggest achievement.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When starting the business, the hardest thing is the time away from family and always being on call. For the first five years after starting the business, my family did not take a vacation. Once the firm is more established, it works with employees, especially those that are not working out. Having those discussions with those employees is very hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a well-thought-out business plan that includes financial projections.
  2. Be 100% dedicated to the business. Don't do things halfway.
  3. Make sure it is the business you like and enjoy.
