Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with John Mathews, Founder of Therapists Market, located in Midlothian, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an online therapeutic tools resource called Therapists Market, which provides documentation tools for therapists and therapeutic tools for professional or self-guided use. I also run my own therapy practice called Virginia Counseling.

Tell us about yourself

I started my own private practice in 2015 and launched Therapists Market in 2022. I became a father in 2021 and decided to reduce my clinical caseload so that I could spend more time with my family. Therapists Market arose organically out of this shift in focus, as it provided a creative outlet that I could work on at odd hours. It also provided an opportunity for my wife Monique and I to work together on a new project, as she is a process engineer who has applied her engineering know-how to the designing of our products.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Figuring out how to use my natural strengths to help others. For example, I love the arts, and I've learned how to channel my passion for writing into business-building through blogging.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Patience. It takes time to build a business, and there will almost inevitably be a period of time before your hard work is rewarded. Good things come to those who wait.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a handle on personal finance -- it will make every aspect of running a business easier, especially in the early going when there may be an income gap.
  2. Be patient (see above).
  3. Create. I'm a big believer in the maxim that "content is king."

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Thank you for the invitation to be interviewed. To anyone on the fence about striking out on your own, go for it!
