What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a freelance photographer and short filmmaker. My clients include magazines, small and large businesses, theatre makers, and public relations agencies working on behalf of a wide range of customers. Much of my work is portraiture for businesses, editorial features, and promotional material. It can also include reportage, interiors, and landscapes. It is nothing if varied!
Tell us about yourself
I've had an interest in photography since I was young. After university, I started out in press photography, working for newspapers in South London. I then moved to work for a news agency in Devon before going freelance in 2011. My motivation is always to create the best work I can and to keep my clients happy. I'm always looking for new opportunities, new challenges, and the chance to keep learning.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
At the moment, I feel it is to come out of the COVID pandemic with a business intact and strong and to diversify into new areas of artistic practice, which I don't think I would have done before.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, it is the variable nature of my earnings and actually taking a break from work. It's difficult being self-employed and still getting work emails when I'm on holiday. However, being a photographer is a vocation; it is my life, much more than just a job.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't be afraid to ask for help.
- Don't forget to have some time off.
- Take care of your mental health for your own sake and for the business.
