Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career advancement but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alana Henry, Founder & Editor-In-Chief of The Writique, LLC, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a career services company called "The Writique" that provides resume/cover letter/LinkedIn profile optimization services to professionals seeking career advancement. I work primarily with senior and executive-level clients.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career as an educator, and I was inspired to create opportunities for my students to learn how to navigate the workforce during (and post) HS. I am always encouraged to help increase access for folks to tools and resources that will assist with career advancement and upwards mobility.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Moving from a small "side hustle" as a solopreneur to a full-service company that has a team of professionals working alongside me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The amount of time it takes to create a business, market the business, and make money for the business. Much of the first few years are spent working "in" the business and not "on" the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be realistic about the time commitment and potential revenue within the first three years.
  2. Ensure you are connected with a community of other entrepreneurs who can help support you along the way.
  3. Understand that your business and processes will be ever-evolving. You will have to learn to be OK with "good enough for right now" and not expect perfection.
