Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenn Prochaska, Founder of The Write Difference LLC., located in Broadview Heights, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Write Difference is a content and copywriting agency focused on online messaging for ambitious businesses. Our services include our signature Message Passport which develops all your foundational brand messages, website strategy & copy, SEO, blog strategy & copy, and email marketing. Our clients are growing businesses that have been in business for at least 1-2 years. Their messaging worked... until it didn't. Now, it no longer reflects their business (they evolved!) We like to say we upgrade their messaging to first class.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the online space since the beginning (Remember Napster?) What I've always loved about internet marketing is its opportunity for equity. Businesses of all sizes can find opportunities online. I pivoted to focus solely on copywriting in 2008. Bringing a fractional CMO perspective to my writing helps me guide my clients more strategically and effectively. My motivation comes from empowering small businesses — we need small businesses to flourish if we're to flourish as a society.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is a hard question — I've written for some pretty big brands in my career, but as a business owner, I think my biggest accomplishment is growing to the point where I can help employ other people. I contract others to help me, which helps their businesses grow. As I put food on my table, I help them put food on theirs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

When you work for someone else, you can have an off day and still get paid. As a business owner, I can't have too many of those kinds of days, or I'll go out of business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a community of support. I found a group of copywriters who've supported me from day one. It's been invaluable.
  2. Be prepared to work. Anyone who thinks this is easy money won't last long. There have been many sleepless nights, a couple of all-nighters, and definitely some very long days.
  3. Be prepared to rest. Burnout is real. I started to experience it myself, and it's not fun. Resting doesn't have to be lying around, but it does mean remembering to spend time with and give attention to loved ones, friends, and yourself.
