Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Vanessa Blaquiere, Owner of The Wellness Zone, located in Fredericton, NB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of The Wellness Zone, a multidisciplinary clinic offering chiropractic, registered massage therapy, acupuncture, and dietetics located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. We have a wide variety of people that walk through our door, anyone from young competitive athletes to older adults. My population as a chiropractor focuses on young athletic women who participate in sports recreationally and competitively and who may or may not be in pain.

Tell us about yourself

When I was in university, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in many aches and pains in the spine. I sought out care from several practitioners without resolution of symptoms. Then ultimately, I saw a chiropractor and felt immediate relief. I ended up switching my career from chemistry to kinesiology immediately and knew I wanted to help people who were just like me! As I was going through chiropractic school, I learned what care I wanted to provide people, which resulted in the clinic that we have today. We know that when you have different types of healthcare practitioners working together collaboratively, it always benefits the patient.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

There's been a lot of successes that we have been able to enjoy in our first year in business. We've grown the largest social media platform of any comparable clinic within our region, we've added 5 more practitioners across three disciplines, and we have been able to participate in a variety of community events as well as make donations.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the hardest part is putting on many different hats. I am trained as a chiropractor, but now I am human resources, marketing, photography, and accounting, as well as many different responsibilities that pop up daily.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Definitely, the biggest tip would be to build a strong team around you and rely on them when needed!
  2. Another great tip I've learned in the past year is to set work-life boundaries because you always need some YOU time!
  3. Last but not least is to have a clear mission as to what you want your business to accomplish and represent.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't stop learning and growing.
