What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Velvet Bar is a dessert bar offering the best Red Velvet desserts in Atlanta. From delicious moist cakes to yummy crispy cookies with a chewy center. Our customers are some of Atlanta's Elite Red Velvet connoisseurs.

Tell us about yourself

My name is April, also known as Bar Chef Flawless. I didn't want to continue working for corporate America during the pandemic for health reasons and needed to care for my new home school son, so I decided to take baking seriously. I began posting on social media about my desserts, and the next thing I knew, I became a full-time Baker.

When I get compliments on how amazing my desserts are, the smiles I put on people's face motivates me to keep going and keep creating. I've found a new love, and I'm excited to share it with the world. My husband is my biggest supporter, along with my mother, that keeps me going and lets me know I'm doing something right.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is having my desserts featured in Atlanta's Hottest Restaurant " Breakfast at Barney's. My cakes have been eaten by some of the world's most famous celebrities. To see their reactions and post on social media is so inspiring; I feel so happy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is the multiple hats you wear when you are starting out. I am The Velvet Bar's marketing team, customer service agent, dessert creator, inventory specialist, and more. Thank God for my amazing mom & supporting friends, who stick by you through the come up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay focused even when people tell you No; KEEP GOING.
  2. Make sure you tell everyone about your product and business (especially strangers who don't look interested).
  3. Pray over your business and treat it like you would treat your child. The growing phase of your brand is so important. It needs the same nurturing and love you give a child.
