What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a retail cookie bakery. Our core customers are high school and college students, young professionals, and middle-aged women 30 - 55.
Tell us about yourself
I've founded, owned, and operated bakeries and cafes since 2007. The Urban Cookie was an idea I designed during the pandemic with my husband's and two sons' help. After selling all of my bakery and cafe businesses in 2017, the pandemic made me realize life is too short not to do something I love, and I love baking!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Navigating and growing during the 2008/2009 recession and preparing to do the same with the post-COVID recession.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It's your baby, and you want to see it grow and prosper, which requires constant attention and time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be sure you are willing to give up a consistent paycheck to get your business off the ground and running.
- Know you'll be committing more than 40 hours a week to it in the early stages.
- Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Hire your team according to what you can most use help with, and find a great balance with your skill set.
