Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jacquelin Darby, Founder of The Unconscious Shift, located in Bowie, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Unconscious Shift is a wellness agency that provides workshops, trainings, and consultations to the community. We specialize in addressing behaviors to promote self-care and to help address multicultural concerns within the community. Our customers are organizations that are looking to provide an environment that promotes wellness to their staff. The goal is to help individuals have an environment that supports the health changes they are making in their life.

Tell us about yourself

I became a licensed clinical psychologist in 2018 and have been providing individual therapy for clients for years. I realized that while working on an individual level is great, I knew that psychological change could happen outside of the therapy space. So I wanted to help individuals develop communities that can support their changes and take health to the next level. The Unconscious Shift was born out of that necessity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the ability to partner with other health-minded organizations to talk about psychological wellness. I have been featured on numerous podcasts and magazine features talking about self-care and how to break the stigma around practicing self-care.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about becoming a business owner is knowing when and how to scale up. It is tempting to do all the things everywhere and at all times. However, the hardest part is knowing when and where to put your energy in. It is important to make decisions that can be supportive in continual action rather than something that is following a trend.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear business plan with goals that you want to accomplish over a span of a few years.
  2. Get a good council of people you can bounce ideas from and who can challenge you to think critically.
  3. Know your audience and know when they change and grow.
