Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cyrus Joseph, owner of The Sugarmill, Inc., located in Covington, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a retail bakery located in Conyers that specializes in cakes, cupcakes, cheesecakes, and French pastries. We accommodated orders that range from your simple everyday confections to custom cakes and weddings cakes.

Tell us about yourself

I am originally from the U.S Virgin Islands. I took an interest in baking on a dare. I was fed up with store-bought cakes, and a family member challenged me to do better (jokingly). I took the challenge and never looked back since. I come from a modest baking background that I picked up from my mom. I am motivated mainly to perfect my craft, be innovative, and be an example to my kids.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment was being able to adapt to these tough economic times and finding different outlets to reach customers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying relevant and having a healthy drive to reinvent yourself and your goals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Customer service.
  2. Remaining consistent.
  3. Do not make impulsive financial decisions.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The Sugarmill is a family-owned business that loves people and enjoys being a blessing. We provide high-quality desserts made from scratch, and we love putting smiles on customers' faces.
