Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Gaddo, Convention Chairperson of The Starbase Inc., located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Starbase Inc. is a 502(c)(3) non-profit. We promote STEM education today with the hope of making the optimistic future envisioned by Star Trek reality.

Tell us about yourself

Starbase Indy is an all-volunteer organization. I enjoy the challenge of creating an event each year that is entertaining, enlightening, and economically viable. Our goal is to have opportunities for our attendees to have a memorable weekend.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

No one owns Starbase Indy. We are an all-volunteer organization. However, my biggest accomplishment has been reaching out to some of my highly skilled friends and enlisting their help. As an example: Last year Elizabeth Brandes helped us launch a very successful marketing program.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Recruiting volunteers who are excited and flexible, and willing to take on numerous tasks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a clear vision.
  2. Be flexible. Be willing to pivot if and when the world changes.
  3. Take ownership of the issues that will arise.
