Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erin Daugherty, Founder of The Spiritual Sunflower, located in Fort Myers, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Spiritual Sunflower offers handmade wire wrap crystal jewelry, original paintings, tarot and oracle reading guidance, and collective ceremonies for the community. My customers are individuals who are interested in holistic healing, reconnecting with their inner child, and investing in their self-growth and happiness.

Tell us about yourself

Art and creative expression have been a driving force in my life for as long as I can remember. I've learned that my artwork will always be there for me, no matter what else is going on in my life, and this keeps me grounded and motivated in my artistic work. It was my biggest childhood dream to be a full-time artist, and I am so grateful to be experiencing that today! My friends and family's support and encouragement pushed me to take my artwork more seriously in 2019, and things started flowing from there. I love being an artist because I believe nothing can bring joy, peace, and love into other's lives like a piece of handmade artwork can.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2021 I was approved for my first loan with income solely from my business, to purchase my first car all by myself! This might seem like a small milestone, but at 22 years old, this was huge for me to accomplish as a small business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Accepting responsibility for your mistakes, failures, and ways you can do better. When you're your own boss, everything, good and bad, is on your shoulders, and it's your responsibility to look out for your growth. It can be more difficult to accept and take responsibility when your own actions hinder your progress versus blaming them on someone else, like a boss. But this also means the progress you are responsible for feels even better!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do some brainstorming and get clear on what your intention is behind your business - why do you want to do this? Why does it mean so much to you? How will starting your business change your life for the better and the lives of the people you love?
  2. Remember that rejection is simply redirection towards better and more supportive opportunities. Failure is part of the process; it takes trial and error to figure out what will work best for you.
  3. Stay true to yourself and your authentic self-expression! It's okay to be inspired by other businesses and what they're doing, but don't just "monkey see, monkey do" your whole business. Make adjustments and try new things that honor your values, your goals, and you actually see it making a positive impact.
