Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Barbara Ford, Founder of The Spirited Sage, located in Vadnais Heights, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I recently closed my office and am doing virtual holistic health consultations and animal Reiki for now and will be doing distance healing in the near future. My immediate goal is to produce E-books so the herbal traditions can continue in a time of natural health censorship.

Tell us about yourself

Having a business is a natural expression of my desire to help others heal and to help enhance their knowledge of how to take care of their health and well-being. I worked many years in the corporate world and state government, and I found it very soul-sucking to push papers when my heart wanted to help others embrace natural health.

I started my business 20 years ago out of my home part-time while working a government job. I got my own office about eight years ago when I believed in myself enough to take that risk. I also did additional training in Nutritional Kinesiology as it is something I really enjoy, and it helped me keep my business profitable enough to maintain an office.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love this question as it allows me to reflect on so many clients that came to me for help healing during a major health crisis. Although they did the work, I was thrilled to be able to apply my skills in helping to create space for their healing journey. Many of those people still come to me periodically, and I get to watch them move into a much happier, healthier future.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are a lot of risks because there are so many things out of our control. Lately, censorship of natural health has become a problem. Small businesses have had support from government entities, but that has changed in the last few years, increasing the risk. I also found that the nitty-gritty bookkeeping duties have become of less interest to me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Love what you do!
