Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Pritchard, owner of MicroBarber, located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MicroBarber is a hair tattoo for thinning / bald hair you need to see to believe. 50% of women and 80% of men experience thinning hair. It’s about time we talk about it and have a cool solution. Popular in all major cities Scalp MicroPigmentation (MicroBarbering) is now available in Saskatchewan!

Tell us about yourself

I have owned local hair salons for over a decade and have also experienced thinning hair myself for just as long. After trying nearly everything under the sun to thicken my hair, I finally discovered Scalp MicroPigmentation and realized I needed to get into this, as I already had a dozen salon clients in mind that would love it. Determined to be the best I can be, I proceeded to take not just one but four certifications for MicroPigmentation in Vancouver, Toronto, Miami, and London, UK.

Scalp MicroPigmentation or SMP is a highly specialized process by which tiny pigment deposits are positioned within the upper dermal layer of the skin. When applied by a skilled practitioner, these deposits replicate the look of real shaven hair or add the appearance of density to longer thinning hair.

Scalp MicroPigementation shows results from the very first treatment! SMP is performed over 3-4 separate sessions to allow each treatment time to settle in. This leads to an even layering of SMP throughout the treated areas.

SMP is relatively painless and can be used to treat any type of hair loss, such as male pattern baldness, thinning hair, alopecia, and scars. SMP is suitable for anyone aged 18+, male or female.

"Join the team" MicroBarber Academy is the very first SMP Scalp MicroPigmentation training center ever in Saskatchewan!

This 3-day certification will set you up with everything you need to start taking clients.

Combining the best training information from all over the world, this comprehensive, immersive, and hands on SMP certification will have you confident and excited to take on a new and rewarding career path.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing a business from scratch that otherwise would not exist. And seeing the young staff grow from day one into full-on professionals purchasing their first car and home from the business is always fulfilling. As well, providing an experience and service that customers rave about and continue to patronage year after year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There is always a weight on your shoulders that doesn't turn off. When you clock out at 5pm or on the weekends, you are responsible for keeping things running, not just for yourself but for everyone involved. It's the food on their table.

But at the same time, this is also the only way I would ever have it. Work to me is a relentless passion, almost an obsession. And I wouldn't get the same drive without the responsibility.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep things agile. Don’t sign long leases if possible; keep renovations affordable and simple. Be able to pivot and adjust without taking huge losses or finding yourself stuck in legal issues.
  2. Become extremely proficient in accounting, finance, budgeting, and tax. The creative stuff is fun but won’t last long without these foundations.
  3. When you become comfortable, you’re overdue to take a risk. Change something up, get your palms sweating again.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

In business, always be running full speed ahead regardless of whether or not anyone is chasing after you. In the end, you’ll just be competing with yourself, leaps and bounds ahead of the rest.
