Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julia Duke, Founder of The Soap Rack, located in Akron, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create bath and body products made with love and humor. I consider my products functional art. My main customers are women looking for something unique that makes them feel good. But really anyone can use my products.

Tell us about yourself

Originally I started making soap just as a hobby. I had recently become a stay home mom to twins, and I just needed something to express my creativity. I tried a few other things, but when I found soap-making, I fell in love. Five hundred bars of soap later, I figured I had better start selling some. Then it just naturally graduated into making bath bombs and other products. I think if you need to stay motivated in your business, you really need to love what you do. Once it becomes a "job," it makes it a lot harder to love, but you can't let the business side steal your joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is probably being featured on my local news.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Well, personally, for me, it's time management. I have ADHD and two kids who I also homeschool. So trying to find the time to do work can be quite challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research. Know what you need to do to open and run a business in your area.
  2. Start a social media page and build your audience.
  3. Network network network. Get yourself out there and meet other entrepreneurs. Show them love, and I guarantee they'll show it back.
