Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaToya Johnson, Founder of The Savvy Business Start-Up, located in Pataskala, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At The Savvy Business Start-Up, we specialize in supporting stay-at-home mommas (and those who desire to be) in developing a plan to begin a business so they can create their version of the good life! Our 3 pillars are faith, family, and financial freedom.

Faith – We believe that God ought to be at the center of every aspect of our lives. When it comes to business – who better to partner with than the Creator of all Things, The Mastermind Himself? Our coaching programs incorporate Bible study and prayer in a way you won’t see in many other programs.

Family – the family is the nucleus of our lives. However, due to financial needs, the place of family in our daily lives can fall to the back burner. We are here to help mothers who aren’t happy with their current situation obtain the financial freedom they desire by educating and coaching them on the initial steps of beginning their business.

Freedom – as children of God, we are called to freedom, and that begins with following after the things that God has placed in your hand and heart. With this program, our goal is to help you discover your path to financial freedom.

As mothers, our children are a top priority. But, nowadays, the demands of the workplace seem to overshadow our ability to be there for our little ones and our families as we desire. Many of us are stuck at a 9 to 5 we don’t enjoy because it is our source of income. Well, no more!

When we create our own streams of income from a business that fits into our lifestyle, we are able to take back control over our daily lives and prioritize those things that are most important to us – without having to ask if it is okay first.

Tell us about yourself

My business journey began with a dream, or should I say a series of dreams. I was working the typical “9 to 5” that, oftentimes, ended up being 9 to 6:30 with an hour commute. During that time, I would return home with little to no energy and a family that got the leftovers of me. I wasn’t praying or reading my Word (the Bible) like I wanted, and needless to say, things were way off balance.

God gave me three consecutive dreams that helped me realize what I was doing wasn’t working and where He needed and wanted me and my family to go. So after much prayer and discussions with my husband, I decided to put in my notice to continue on the journey that God had set before me. At that time, I chose to say “yes” to my Maker, not knowing what would be next.

Within 2 years of leaving my job, I began The Savvy Business Start-Up to support other mothers who found themselves in the same place as I was, and within 2 years of beginning the business, it was generating revenue that surpassed my annual income at my previous place of employment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is simply stepping out to do it! So many times, we put things on hold or talk ourselves out of the dream. With The Savvy Business Start-Up, I stepped out and did it! Now, my life is so much better because of it!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Whether working from home or commuting to a facility, maintaining a wonderful work/life balance is still a challenge that must be faced head-on and addressed - sometimes time and time again.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose a business that you will love leading. (You’ve spent enough time working jobs you didn’t enjoy.)
  2. Make it a priority. This may begin as a “side gig.” So, you will need to be disciplined and make this venture a priority - above hanging out with a friend, social media, and at times, sleep.
  3. Just do it! Stop putting it off and step out on the venture of a lifetime! Your customers are waiting for you!
