Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Sandleben, Founder of The Sama Mama, located in Prescott, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is helping people with their pelvic floor health through yoga and functional movement. I specialize in women's health and specific times of life, like postpartum and menopause. My mission at The Sama Mama is to empower people in all stages of life to restore their bodily and emotional confidence and help them reconnect to their innate wisdom.

Tell us about yourself

I am a mother of two and a yoga teacher with twenty years of experience in the large metropolitan areas of New York and the Bay Area. Now I'm residing in my hometown in Northern Arizona. My experiences with birth injury and postpartum health challenges were a catalyst for studying and teaching pelvic floor yoga and postpartum care. What I found is that through yoga, breath work, and compassion practices, I was able to heal from painful scar tissue and nerve pain and reclaim my confidence and pleasure. I am deeply motivated by the conversations and aha moments of my clients that arise during my sessions and classes. Pelvic floor dysfunction is usually something we are told to live with, especially as women—so in teaching others about their pelvic floor anatomy, how they function, and ways to bring their bodies back into balance brings me so much joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is starting my business while being a mom to small children.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There's a huge learning curve since your business is something brand new. So although there's support and coaching, there's no formula for your unique offering in the world. I love this maxim from the Stanford Behavior Scientist, B.J. Fogg—"it's not about trial and error but rather practice and revise."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My three tips for anyone looking to start a business are to do the mindset work of knowing your values, getting clear on the "why" of creating your own business, and the impact you hope to see in the world. If the desire comes from inside, then that will sustain you through all the bumps and hurdles along the way.
