Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Guarniere, Founder and CEO of The Résumé Rx, located in Redding, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder of The Résumé Rx - a business that helps nursing professionals find, land, and love their dream jobs! You might think that nursing jobs are a dime a dozen, but the truth is that there are super high rates of burnout in the profession, as well as amazing opportunities for growth and advancement! As a nurse practitioner myself, I realized that my colleagues were struggling to showcase their worth and advocate for themselves in the workplace - thus, The Résumé Rx was born! I am mainly a content channel with social media posts, videos, email newsletters, and podcast episodes - all of that are free. My paid services are self-study courses and templates and are price accessible.

Tell us about yourself

I am a mother to three young girls, and my ideas for the business started back in 2018 when I went part-time in my nurse practitioner job. I had been working full-time nights, plus overtime, and I was struggling to feel connected with my work. I was on my way to burnout! But I had just kept pushing along because I felt it was expected of me. After my twins were born, I finally realized that most of the rules in life are made up (ha!) and that I could carve my own path. I absolutely love what I do, and I'm motivated every day by the fact that there are others who need to learn that it's okay to carve out their own path too, whether it's leaving a job that is toxic, exploring a dream that they've been afraid to go after, or just having the confidence to ask for a raise.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am very proud of the community I've been able to build and the visibility that I've had as a business owner. Yes, the revenue milestones are great, but what I really love is knowing that I've designed a business where I can impact as many nursing professionals as possible. Since the majority of my products are self-study and I offer very limited one-on-one services, it means I can maximize my time creating free content and collaborating with other platforms to get the word out about my business (like this interview!!!).

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is being bold and brave enough to make decisions. It's also one of the most fulfilling! Everything that happens with the business is a result of my decision-making. That means if something doesn't go as planned, it's on me - so I have to embrace radical personal responsibility. But it also means that everything that goes well is on me, too.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips I would give any future or hopeful business owners would be:

  1. Get clear about your audience - who they are, what they believe, and where they hang out. This will help you with marketing as well as informing your content - you want to be able to get into the mindset of your audience so that you can create amazing, relevant content - and know where they hang out (whether it's online or in a physical area) will help you know where to focus your marketing efforts.
  2. Focus on delivering value and serving your audience, and make it a higher priority than selling your services (at least to start). You have to eventually make money; otherwise, you have a hobby and not a business. However, people spend money with companies and individuals they know, like, and trust. If you focus on genuinely serving your audience, you will build that relationship and make the sales invitations easier.
  3. Collect data - as you start and grow and run your business, you will want to know what's working, what could be doing better, and where to focus your efforts. Your feelings about those answers may not always be rooted in fact, so having data that you track will be helpful in doing proper analysis and also setting goals. This may seem like something for an advanced business owner to focus on, but many will say they wish they had started tracking things sooner!
