Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Danielle Broder, Founder of The Recoverie, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a creative business coach for artists and crafters that want to learn to make a part-time or full-time income selling their work online... without Etsy! My clients are artists that have incredible drive and are looking for something more creative and rewarding than the average 9-5.

Tell us about yourself

Originally, I'm an illustrator and designer myself, and this all started as me trying to make a living selling my own art full-time. I started in 2010, and it's been a crazy progression from selling my work (block printed textiles and prints) to teaching my process, building online courses, learning how to sell online, and now coaching other artists and crafters on how to sell online, just like I do! My client is just the 2010 version of me - desperate to create a business that allows freedom to be creative daily, make stuff, and get it out into the world while paying the bills. I want to help people like that as much as possible!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In terms of my own work - booking huge corporate events, collaborating with brands like Airbnb, and quitting my day job after the demand for my block printing class went off. I'm proud that I created something that people love and will pay me for!

In terms of coaching, helping others create income (sometimes a LOT!) and change their lives through building their businesses. It's extremely fulfilling!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being responsible for everything. As a solopreneur, if I don't do it, it doesn't get done, and I have no one to blame but myself! Also, finding enough time to do everything I want to in order to grow. There is never enough time!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start - be decisive, come back later, and improve.
  2. Don't spend time creating ANYTHING until you've done your research and have cash in hand for it.
  3. Don't sit and wait for things to happen - go make them happen!
