Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patty Lennon, Author of The Receiving School, located in Brookfield, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Did you ever meet someone who struggles to receive? They give and give, but the minute someone wants to give back to them, they resist. I help people just like that learn to open up to the abundance, love, and support the Universe and their fellow humans offer them through my program, The Receiving School.

Tell us about yourself

I'm an ex-type-A corporate banker who learned there was more to life than making money. After getting a Masters's in Psychology and later studying with many spiritual teachers, I developed a unique system that blends brain science and metaphysics called The Receiving Method. Teaching others how to learn to receive is truly what motivates me because I have struggled with it most of my life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2021 I published Make Space for Magic, along with an oracle card deck and guided journal that supports the work in the book. I don't think I'd ever sign up for that much creativity in one year EVER again, but it does feel like one of my biggest accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is balancing my roles and responsibilities outside of my business. It knows when to give the business extra time, when to give my family extra time and when to take that time for myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. For years before I opened The Receiving School, I taught people how to improve their sales conversations so that they could increase revenue. Inevitably the fear of being judged for charging what they were worth would come up and be at the root of their sales struggles. As you grow your business, check in with yourself to see if you are willing to receive as big as you give to your clients. Just this awareness can shift things in big ways!
  2. Pay people to do the things you are not competent in. When you invest, you grow much faster.
  3. Schedule vacation time. Burnout is real. I've been there, and I think most seasoned business owners have as well. You can't produce anything of value when you are burned out. Treat yourself well, even before you realize the massive success that is coming for you!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be kind to yourself. We are always harder on ourselves than we would be on any other individual. The world needs kindness now more than any other resource. It is easier to share kindness when we first receive it.
