Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kim Johnson, Owner of The Professional Hoodrat, located in Glen Burnie, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Professional Hoodrat is the apparel line dedicated to people that are thriving in Corporate America yet still love Trap music.

Tell us about yourself

I started The Professional Hoodrat with a collection of streetwear to celebrate the election of our nation’s first Black Vice President. From there, I went on to create streetwear with a message geared specifically to people thriving in Corporate America that still love Trap Music. With messages ranging from “Minding the Business that Pays Me” to “Building Generational Wealth,” the Professional Hoodrat prides itself on creating a brand that speaks to the masses. There’s literally something for everyone.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The Professional Hoodrat is a two-time recipient of the Buy From a Black Woman Clothing Line of the Year Award.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a mother with a young child, balance is definitely a struggle. We want to pour into our businesses endlessly, but we need to make time to pour into ourselves and our families as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set weekly goals. This will help you become disciplined, and you’ll be able to see incremental growth over time.
  2. Don’t let comparison be the thief of joy. It’s easy to look at the progress of others and allow that to make you feel down. Remember, we are all running different races. We will arrive at the “finish line” or see success when it’s our time. Just focus on the work that needs to be done to get there in the meantime.
  3. Do it scared! Taking risks is scary but necessary for a business owner. You never know how well something will turn out unless you take a chance.
